Diabetes Atlas Initiative

A unique aspect of the National Minority Quality Forum's overall efforts to improve diabetes self-care, prevention, medical treatment, management, and monitoring has been the use of the Forum database to create maps of diabetes prevalence in the United States. The first-generation Diabetes Atlas (D-ATLAS) is a unique online tool that graphically maps diabetes prevalence, using zip-code-level data. This Web-based resource provides the user with on-demand capacity for comparing and contrasting prevalences of type 2 diabetes nationwide, by state, by congressional district, and by state legislative district. For the first time, a D-ATLAS user has the ability to support educational, advocacy, and public-affairs initiatives by demonstrating and focusing on disparities in precise geographical areas and communities.

The D-ATLAS maps are available through a password-protected link from the Forum Web site for advocacy groups, policy makers, and sponsoring organizations. The D-ATLAS is updated periodically as new data become available.

Awareness-enhancement events and training and educational materials for the D-ATLAS were developed and directed toward eight targeted states throughout the fall of 2006. The D-ATLAS was presented to a national audience in March 2007.

The D-ATLAS is brought to you by a multi-stakeholder Forum collaboration. The initial D-ATLAS was supported in part by unrestricted educational grants from Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Eli Lilly and Company.

Licenses for access to the D-ATLAS became available on April 1, 2007. Please contact the Forum for more information.
